The purpose of the present study was to examine the effectiveness of encouragement training based on Adlerian approach in social and emotional well-being of boarding school students. This research was an experimental study including pre-test and post-test with control group. The statistical population of the study comprised boarding school boys in Khorramabad in 2012-2013 academic year. Two schools were chosen through simple random sampling from among the six boarding schools and in the next step 40 male students were selected. The subjects were randomly assigned to two groups of control and experimental (20 students in each group). The experimental group received ten encouragement training sessions based on Adlerian approach for ten weeks. The control group did not receive any intervention. The instrumentation included subjective well-being questionnaire for adults which assessed the emotional and social aspects of subjective well-being. The results of multivariate analysis of covariance (MANCOVA) showed that encouragement training based on Adlerian approach was effective in social and emotional well-being of male students (P≥0.001). Due to the fact that encouragement training can play a significant role in the formation of new and genuine insights and deeds as well as positive affect, this treatment can promote emotional and social well-being of these students.
