Parenting can be considered a cultural characteristic, varying in dimensions and outcomes across different cultures. The present study aims to achieve a phenomenological understanding of parenting styles and dimensions in Iranian mothers. This research follows a descriptive phenomenological approach. The sample group consisted of 23 mothers with children aged 3 and 4 years, selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected using semi-structured interviews. The results indicated that parenting dimensions among Iranian mothers can be categorized into four aspects: acceptance/rejection (in terms of responding to children's needs and requests), engagement/disengagement (in terms of a mother’s interaction with her child throughout the day), soft/strict/permissive discipline and control (in terms of applying order and control in the child-parent relationship), and opportunity/deprivation (in terms of providing exploration and self-expression opportunities for the child). A notable finding was that, contrary to traditional models, dimensions such as rejection, authoritarianism, instability, and neglect were not identified in this study. These results may reflect characteristics and transformations within Iran’s postmodern metropolitan families, including the democratization of family structures, child-centric parenting, the rise of multimedia and virtual interactions, and the expansion of cultural capital among Iranian families over the past two decades. |
